This Wednesday, October 8, Patricia Bullrich engaged in a heated exchange with Prosecutor Susana Pernas during a hearing of the Senate’s Agreements Committee (the body responsible for handling executive requests). The session lacked a quorum, preventing the advancement of a majority or minority report.

Bullrich made her opposition clear regarding the renewal of Prosecutor Susana Pernas for the position of Chief Prosecutor before the Oral Courts for Minors in Buenos Aires. During the committee session, the senator, speaking in her capacity as former Minister of Security, questioned: “Do you understand the role of the Police? Who will defend society if officers feel that a prosecutor insists after a final appeal and goes to the Supreme Court to request a sentence increase?” The prosecutor, from the witness stand, replied that the case was never considered “trigger-happy,” but that there was an “excess” by Chocobar toward the criminal, as he did not merely attempt to detain him but sought to kill him. Bullrich took the floor again, stating that “doctrine must change, otherwise the Police will never have security,” and emphasized that “the justice system does not support the correct actions of the police.”

Subsequently, the senator expressed on the social network X that she would vote against the new appointment of Prosecutor Susana Pernas, should a report be obtained and it reach the plenary session.

“This prosecutor sought prison time for Chocobar, a police officer who risked his life to stop a criminal who had stabbed a tourist. And when that conviction was annulled, she came out to defend it again.

They are there to defend society and prosecute crime, not to defend criminals and persecute those who protect us. She cannot continue to have a place in the Justice system.”

She concluded her statement by asserting that she is always on the side of the people.
